Aliens orbiting 1402 stars near Earth could be looking at us right now | New Scientist

Aliens could be watching us.

The easiest way to spot a planet outside our solar system is to catch it passing between us and its star, blocking out some of the star's light.

They found 1402 stars that are currently in the right position to see Earth pass in front of the sun, plus 313 that were in such a position in the past and 319 that will be someday.

The discovery of two gas giant planets orbiting a distant star similar to the sun

Members of the NASA-funded Planet Hunters Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite Project, known as the TESS probe, discovered planets around a distant star called HD 152843, which is located about 352 light-years from Earth.

The star has a mass similar to the Sun, but is about 1.5 times larger and slightly brighter, according to a NASA statement.

NASA blasted dozens of baby squid into space | Popular Science

Earlier this month, NASA launched a routine SpaceX resupply mission to the International Space Station. But onboard that ship were 128 highly unusual passengers: newly hatched Hawaiian bobtail squid.

The baby cephalopods are part of the UMAMI study (short for Understanding of Microgravity on Animal-Microbe Interactions), an investigation into how the conditions of space travel impact microbiomes, the bodily flora present in all animals that play a crucial role in gut and immune health.

Citizen scientists discover 2 gas giants around a distant sun-like star | Space

A pair of gas-giant exoplanets was found orbiting a distant sun-like star, thanks to the help of citizen scientists around the world.

Members of the NASA-funded Planet Hunters Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) project discovered the two planets around a distant star called HD 152843, which is located about 352 light-years from Earth.

EarthSky | Huge and opaque 'something' dims a giant star

Remember Tabby’s Star ? Citizen scientists with the Planet Hunters project spotted it in 2015. Tabby’s Star was dimming rapidly, in weird and unexpected ways. The theories for its unusual behavior ranged from alien megastructures to clouds of dust.

The star, VVV-WIT-08, is an evolved giant star, some 100 times larger than our sun. It’s older than our sun, too, about 8 billion years old in contrast to our sun’s 4 1/2 billion years.

Bad Astronomy | Why does Earth orbit the Sun instead of a red dwarf

Here's what seems like a weird question: Why do we orbit a star like the Sun instead of a red dwarf?

In that sense, it's really odd we orbit a star like the Sun. Statistically speaking — by a factor of about 100 to 1 — we should be orbiting a red dwarf. Why don't we?

Two gaseous planets were discovered by citizen scientists 352 light-years from Earth  | Daily

Two exoplanets orbiting a star larger than the sun that is 352 light-years from Earth have been spotted by a group of citizen scientists, including a father and his seven-year-old son.

The star, known as HD 152843, is host to two planets - b and c - and is a bright G dwarf star, which has an extreme surface temperature ranging between 5,300 and 6,000 Kelvin. It has a similar mass to our sun (which is also a G star), but is 1.5 times bigger and 'slightly brighter,' NASA said.
