Study: An Extra Pinch of Chaos, and BAM, New Planets

Scientists just uncovered a crucial ingredient for the formation of new planets: An extra serving of chaos.

To back up a little bit: Researchers already knew that protoplanetary disks, those loosely-clumped gas and dust that orbit young stars gradually glom together, create new worlds.

The team that made the chaotic discovery happened to be in the right place at the right time — they were studying the young star Elias 2-27. Because it's still so new and actively forming new planets, it's a hotbed of cosmic activity.

Many Milky Way stars may host planets like Earth - Futurity

Researchers have developed a new method for better understanding the relationship between a star’s chemical composition and planet formation.

The researchers found that the majority of stars in their dataset are similar in composition to the sun, somewhat at odds with earlier work and implying that many stars in the Milky Way could host their own Earth-like planets.

The most common technique for finding exoplanets, ones that exist outside of the solar system, involves the transit method, when an exoplanet moves between its star and the observer and causes a dip in the star’s brightness. While most of the known exoplanets have been discovered using this method, this approach is limited because exoplanets can only be detected when their orbit and the observer are perfectly aligned and have short enough orbiting periods.

The relationship between stars and planets may be more complex than previously thought - Tech

Solar-type stars exhibit their highest levels of magnetic activity during their early convective pre-main-sequence (PMS) phase of evolution. The most powerful PMS flares, super-flares, and mega-flares have peak X-ray luminosities and energies.

Konstantin Getman, research professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State who led the study, said, “In some ways, this is our ultimate origin story: How the Earth and solar system came to be.”

Probing the atmosphere of extra-solar planets

Extra-solar planet (or 'exoplanet') science is a fast-developing field. Twenty-six years after the discovery of the first exoplanet around a main-sequence star by M. Mayor and D. Queloz (1995) who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2019, more than 4500 have been detected. Two words can characterise the exoplanet population:

The next step to get crucial information on exoplanets is to characterise their atmosphere using spectroscopic observations over a broad wavelength range from the Ultra-Violet to the mid-Infrared. A wealth of information can be extracted from such observations: the presence and abundance of atoms, molecules, ions, hazes and clouds; the vertical and horizontal thermal structures, just to name a few examples.

Speculation has been rife about the contents of an unclassified report set to be released later this month from the Pentagon's Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) task force.

NASA discovers "strange" planets - with a special phenomenon

Researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the University of New Mexico have found the exoplanet and named it TOI-1231b. It orbits an M-type dwarf star. It is not a yellow dwarf, like our sun, but a red star.

NASA scientists confirm that a new era has ushered in. After mostly only previous exoplanets were counted, it is now also possible to closely examine individual planets and their atmospheres. Initially, experts started from the red dwarf and were distinguished by it. They were also able to determine the radius and mass of the newly discovered planet TOI-1231 b. Using this data, it was then possible for them to determine the density and make a hypothesis about the planet’s atmosphere.
