Off Topic: The lost worlds of our solar system | Eurogamer.net

If you left Earth in a rocket ship in the 1820s, headed for Jupiter, I guess that would be pretty incredible by itself. What I want to talk about today, though, is something I continue to find mind-bending.

It's likely that you know all this stuff already, so apologies for going over it again. These four planets were discovered between 1801 and 1807, lying in what we now consider to be the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

How to See Huge Passing Comet at Its Closest Point to Earth

The comet C/2017 K2 is due to reach its closest point to Earth on Thursday, and it will be possible to see it either online or in-person—provided you have a telescope and dark skies.

The comet has attracted scientists' attention for years since it was first discovered in 2017. At the time, the comet was notable since it was the most distant active comet headed towards the inner solar system that had ever been seen, and was surrounded by a cloud of dust 80,000 miles wide.

Scientists solve mystery of why the inner Solar System does not spin faster

Early in the evolution of the Solar System , soon after the formation of the Sun, the protoplanets were coalescing in the accretion disk , leftover material from the formation of the Sun with a fraction of its mass. The material in the disc spirals slowly towards the star.

Over the years, scientists have come up with multiple theories to explain why the inner Solar System spins at a slower than expected rate. One of these was that friction between the material in the inner and outer Solar Systems, slowing down the rate of spin of the inner Solar System.

Scientists pinpoint Martian origin of 'Black Beauty' meteorite | Space

The findings may reveal clues about the origins of Mars , Earth and the solar system's other terrestrial planets.

Previous research found that NWA 7034 is the oldest known Martian meteorite, dating to about 4.5 billion years ago. It is also the only so-called brecciated Martian sample available on Earth , meaning it contains angular fragments of multiple rock types cemented together.
