Massive Stars May Commit Grand Theft Planet - Eos

Young stars more than twice the Sun's mass generate extreme radiation that makes it very challenging for planets to coalesce from dust and gas. And yet a handful of exoplanets more massive than Jupiter and on orbits more distant than Pluto's have been discovered around these O and B stars.

Astronomers theorize that stars like our Sun build planets from a swirling disk of dust and gas. ( Many observations support this theory.) Gravitational instabilities in the disk cause small clumps of planetary material to collapse inward and accrete more material.

Big planets get a head start in pancake-thin nurseries

Using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, the team obtained very high resolution images of the proto-planetary disk Oph163131, located in a nearby star-forming region called Ophiuchus.

"Looking at proto-planetary disks edge-on gives a clear view of the vertical and radial dimensions, so that we can disentangle the dust evolution processes at work," said Villenave. "ALMA gave us our first look at the distribution of millimeter-sized grains in this disk.

Auroras on Jupiter Seen Spawning Massive and Extreme Heat Waves - CNET

The observations help solve one of the more perplexing mysteries in our solar system: why some gas giant planets in deep space, including Jupiter and Saturn, are hotter than expected when they should be ice cold.

A team led by James O'Donoghue of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, produced maps of Jupiter's upper atmosphere that helped identify an unexpected heated region with temperatures of 700 degrees Celsius (1,292 degrees Fahrenheit) spanning roughly 10 Earth diameters.
