All the Planets in the Solar System Have Aligned

All of the planets of the solar system are visible together in the night sky right now, providing stargazers with a "spectacular" show to end the year.

Over the next few days, it is possible to see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn simultaneously with the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune can be observed with binoculars or a telescope.

Solar Power Takes On Xmas Day, Emerges Victorious

We were meant to spend yesterday at another family member’s house for a get-together with the clan, but on Xmas Eve my better half received a phone call from her brother:

“Hey sis, our air conditioner is kaput and the parts won’t be available until the New Year. Can we hold Xmas lunch over at your place?”

One astronomical object could be the best resource for future space colonies

The stars call to us, as Carl Sagan once said. Given the human drive to explore our world and expand our reach, it is likely only a matter of time before we begin to build our homes in the Solar System.

There has long been a dream of building a massive rotating space station to call home, such as the one featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey , but the challenges of construction are huge, not to mention the logistics of lifting such large quantities of steel and other materials into space.

NASA Makes Asteroid Defense a Priority, Moving its NEO Surveyor Mission Into the Development Phase ...

There’s an old adage in the engineering field – what gets funded gets built.

NEO Surveyor is, as the name implies, a satellite specifically designed to survey for objects near the Earth (NEO).

Typically, their signals are just background noise against the overwhelming signal from the Sun. But NEO Surveyor will be able to detect individual asteroid heat signatures, allowing it to isolate potentially dangerous asteroids using this novel technique.

Why aliens were in the news so much in 2022 | Salon.com

It is unusual enough for a theoretical physicist to be a celebrity, but Dr. Avi Loeb's situation takes the strange factor one step further.

"There is this third dimension of space which offers so much more exciting information and perspective that we tend to ignore."

Birds could hold the secret to interstellar flight

Stand on a coastal shore and watch how eagles, ravens, seagulls, and crows take flight in high winds. It's an inspiring sight, to be sure.

This was the subject of a recent study led by researchers from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. By circling between regions of the heliosphere with different wind speeds, they state, a spacecraft would be capable of "dynamic soaring" the same way avian species are.
