A far-out plan to build an asteroid city

But what are a bunch of physicists to do when a pandemic grinds the world to a halt if not work on something “wildly theoretical,” as they put it? And there’s few things more aptly described as such than an asteroid city.

Even more wild: they’ve got an idea they think — and the math says — could work (if we are ever in a position to do it).

130-foot asteroid to come scarily close to Earth TODAY, says NASA; Should you worry? | Tech News

Five such potentially hazardous asteroids are rushing toward Earth today. The largest of them all is said to have a diameter of 130-foot, which is equal to an airplane.

NASA's JPL has given the tag of potentially hazardous objects to all the space rocks that approach within 4.6 million miles of Earth and have a size larger than about 150 meters. This is what makes this asteroid a potential threat to Earth.

NASA begins NEO Surveyor next-gen asteroid hunter construction | SYFY WIRE

There are more than 1.1 million known asteroids in the solar system. Most of them are in the asteroid belt, a loose collection of bits and bobs left over from the formation of the Sun and planets, but every once in a while, one of them goes rogue.

It's an idea which was explored beautifully in the 2012 film Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (now streaming on Peacock ). The movie opens on a world in the path of an asteroid 70 miles wide.

The Greatest and Strangest Science of 2022

In September, NASA purposefully crashed a spacecraft, named DART, into an asteroid to see if it knocked the Asteroid off course. The $325 million refrigerator-sized spacecraft slammed into an asteroid 6.8 million miles from the Earth.

Scientists in Australia were able to grow a small 800,000-cell brain in their lab that learned to play an old video game in just five minutes. The brain was created using STEM cells and a mouse embryo. They connected the tiny brain to the old Atari game called Pong using tiny electrodes.
