'Super-Earth' Exoplanet Discovered Orbiting One Of The Oldest Stars In The Milky Way

Scientists have located a 'Super Earth' that is being believed to orbit one of the oldest stars in the Milky Way galaxy. The exoplanet gets its title as it is suspected to be around three times the mass of Earth, with a size 50% larger than our home planet.

The planet, known as TOI-561b, has been described in a new study accepted for publication in the The Astronomical Journal . Despite the planet's mass, its density is about the same as that of Earth, astronomers found in the study.

UK rocket firm plans space tug to clean up orbiting junk

Skyrora, the Edinburgh rocket company, has completed a successful test firing of the upper stage of its rocket Skyrora XL.

The rocket is intended to be a 'space tug' that could tow satellites into different orbits, replace old satellites and clean up space junk.

Skyrora's plan is to launch a rocket in 2022/3 which will be able to deliver payloads into orbit – and perform tasks such as replacing redundant satellites or removing junk.

China Should Build a Space Station Orbiting the Moon, Father of Lunar Mission Says - Caixin Global

As part of its project of landing space exploration crews on the moon, China should establish a space station in lunar orbit rather than one orbiting the earth, the father of China's lunar mission said Wednesday in a meeting.

"It's better to build the space station in moon orbit so the future moon landing would not be as difficult as the former Apollo program," said Ouyang Ziyuan, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and first chief scientist of China's lunar probe project.

'Old Faithful' galaxy has brilliant outbursts every 114 days | Space

Researchers saw repeated outbursts — every 114 days, on average — in a galaxy some 570 million light-years away from Earth. (For perspective, the nearest star system to Earth is roughly 4 light-years away.) The event, known as ASASSN-14ko, is flaring vehemently and in several wavelengths of light.

"These are the most predictable and frequent recurring multiwavelength flares we've seen from a galaxy's core, and they give us a unique opportunity to study this extragalactic Old Faithful in detail. We think a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center creates the bursts as it partially consumes an orbiting giant star," study researcher Anna Payne, a NASA graduate fellow at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, stated in a NASA statement .

How to build your own DIY orbiting camera rig with a twist - DIY Photography

Sometimes, you just need a spinning camera that orbits around your subject for a video. There are many really fancy, expensive, customised and automated rigs out there that will let you do this costing a whole lot of money. But sometimes, you just want to go the DIY route with grip gear that you possibly already own.

As explained in the video, the rig was made from a couple of c-stands, steel tubes, corner brackets, clamps and other grip gear allowing them to safely rotate a camera over the head of a seated subject. It lets them start the camera at one side of the shot, rotate it over the subject and end on the other side while keeping their main subject in the centre of the frame the whole time.

A planet called KOI-5Ab orbits in a triple-star system with a skewed configuration

"KOI-5Ab fell off the table and was forgotten," says Ciardi, who presented the findings at a virtual meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). By 2014, Ciardi and other researchers had used the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, Caltech's Palomar Observatory near San Diego, and Gemini North in Hawaii to show that the star circled by KOI-5Ab is one member of a triple-star system called KOI-5.

"I thought to myself, "I remember this target,'" says Ciardi, after seeing the TESS data. He then went back and reanalyzed all the data, including that from the California Planet Search, led by Caltech professor of astronomy Andrew Howard. The California Planet Search uses ground-based telescopes, including the Keck Observatory, to search for the telltale wobble in a star that occurs when a planet circles around it and exerts a gravitational tug.

The oddities in our universe are many, and new research has thrown light on one such strange star system discovered more than a decade ago. Researchers have found a planet with three suns and an unusual kink in its orbit.

Planet KOI-5Ab was discovered all the way back in 2009, as just the second candidate discovered by NASA's then-new Kepler mission. But no one paid much attention to this particular world as Kepler continued to discover new and exciting planets.
