China flies high on space science

Spending on scientific leadership and building international research partnerships and collaborations do not mean pouring money into a figurative black hole. Instead, they mean oiling the engine room of scientific discovery.

Indeed, the recent image of the black hole (or rather the material swirling just outside it) at the center of our galaxy comes from one such partnership. It has captured the imagination of millions across the world.

NASA Selects Mendillo for Fellowship Program, Awards Him $7M Grant | UMass Lowell

The fellowship , named after the distinguished American astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, gives early career researchers the opportunity to develop innovative technologies while growing the skills needed to lead astrophysics flight instrumentation development projects.

"It's a great honor," says Mendillo, who began working at UMass Lowell in 2013 as a postdoctoral fellow before being promoted to research scientist and then assistant research professor. "The fellowship will help grow visibility for our lab and all the awesome work that we're doing."

Scheduling Webb's Science – James Webb Space Telescope

In the lead-up to the release of Webb's first full-color images and spectroscopic data on July 12 , the Webb team is now in the last phase of commissioning the science instruments.

After commissioning is finished, the fun – and discoveries – will start: implementing the hundreds of peer-reviewed science programs that have been selected for Webb's first year. The area on the sky that Webb can see at any given time is called the field of regard .

James Webb Space Telescope hit by micrometeoroid just months into flight | Space

NASA's next-generation space observatory has sustained its first noticeable micrometeoroid impact less than six months after launch, but the agency isn't too concerned.

The James Webb Space Telescope , also known as Webb or JWST, launched on Dec. 25, 2021.

"With Webb's mirrors exposed to space, we expected that occasional micrometeoroid impacts would gracefully degrade telescope performance over time," Lee Feinberg, Webb optical telescope element manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said in the statement.

NASA to help Australia blast into the space race - Asia Times

Over the next month, NASA will launch three rockets from the Arnhem Space Center in the Northern Territory on the Dhupuma Plateau, near Nhulunbuy. The rockets are 13-meter "sounding" rockets that will not reach orbit but will take scientific observations.

The launches represent a number of firsts for the Australian space industry. They also represent a major step forward for commercial space operators, as well as signaling the opportunity for future joint projects between Australia and the United States.
