In Japan, humanoid robots could soon become part of the family - Big Think

For years, Japan has been the indisputable leader in robotics. If Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge is the cradle of humanity, Japan is the cradle of the humanoids, developing the first humanoid robot in the 1970s and many iterations since.

The story by now should sound familiar to you. Like Pinocchio, Astro Boy’s story was retold in various mediums and animated adaptations. Professor Tenma, the head of the Ministry of Science, is obsessed with creating a human-like robot while being a neglectful father to his own son, Tobio.

From workforce development to robots?

Warren Smeltzer said he oversees the training of about 500 to 600 people a year. He received funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Workforce Training Grant funds, but last month lawmakers decided to reallocate that money to business automation.

Smeltzer is the Training Director at the Helena branch of the Laborers’ International Union of North America in Montana. He oversees the operation of the training center, sometimes an instructor, sometimes a toilet cleaner.
