Formation of super-Earth alien planets perhaps explained | Space

Now, in a new study, researchers suggest they may be able to explain the origin of these enigmatic worlds and also that of other rocky planets and moons, including Earth and its siblings.

In the 30 or so years since astronomers first began detecting exoplanets orbiting distant stars, researchers have detected many strange new kinds of worlds unlike any known in our solar system.

Venus, Saturn will be near each other in the night sky next week

Starting next week, sky-watchers will be able to see Venus and Saturn with the naked eye as the sun sets, as the two planets will appear near each other.

"It'll be a conjunction," said Tim Brothers, manager at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Wallace Observatory . "That's when two planets are close to each other. And they will be generally close to each other for the next few weeks."

Scientists publish open AI able to map planets | E&T Magazine

A team of international scientists have developed 'DeepLandforms', an open-source, artificial-intelligence tool for planetary mapping.

The team is formed by researchers from Constructor University in Bremen, Germany, the University of Padua, and the University of Bologna.

Watch Mars reverse directions in the sky tonight (Jan. 12) | Space

On Thursday (Jan.12), Mars will end its retrograde motion which has seen it moving westward through the night sky. Starting tonight, the Red Planet will resume its usual eastward, or "prograde" motion past the constellations. 

According to In the Sky (opens in new tab) , Mars will be in the constellation of Taurus as it leaves retrograde motion. Observers from New York City should look to the eastern horizon during the evening to see it. The Red Planet will appear 4 degrees above the horizon at around 5:10 p.m.

Astonishing new Nasa image shows stars and planets as they form | The Independent

The vast, swirling new image shows a young cluster of stars known as NGC 346, located in the Small Magellanic Cloud or SMC. They are found more than 200,000 lightyears from Earth.

Scientists believe that conditions in that star cluster are similar to those in the early universe, when it was giving birth to new stars at a rapid rate.

Photosynthetic Fluorescence From Earth-Like Planets Around Sun-Like Aand Cool Stars - Astrobiology

Remote sensing of the Earth has demonstrated that photosynthesis is traceable as the vegetation red edge (VRE), which is the steep rise in the reflection spectrum of vegetation, and as solar-induced fluorescence.

This study examined the detectability of biological fluorescence from two types of photosynthetic pigments, chlorophylls (Chls) and bacteriochlorophylls (BChls), on Earth-like planets with oxygen-rich/poor and anoxic atmospheres around the Sun and M dwarfs.
