Scientists Just Found an "Impossible" Black Hole in The Milky Way Galaxy

A new black hole search method has just yielded fruit, and boy is it juicy. Astronomers have found a stellar-mass black hole clocking in at around 70 times the mass of the Sun - but according to current models of stellar evolution, its size is impossible, at least in the Milky Way.

" Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution," said astronomer Jifeng Liu of the National Astronomical Observatory of China.

But this one-big-black-hole-to-a-galaxy isn't always the case. Some galaxies have two supermassive black holes in their core, which is probably due to galactic mergers . Galaxies can sometimes collide and coalesce, forming one much larger galaxy. Our own Milky Way has grown to its present hefty mass this way, though we only have one black hole in our core.

How do you weigh a supermassive black hole? | SciTech Europa

It is common for mysterious, massive dark objects to lurk at the centre of galaxies. Many astronomers believe these to be black holes with masses than can exceed a billion Suns.

These supermassive black holes may power quasars, the most luminous sources in the Universe. These entities may halt the formation of stars by releasing copious amounts of energy which heats up and fragments the gas in their host galaxies.

Measuring the mass of a supermassive black hole is usually achieved by measuring the velocity of the surrounding stars or gas, which has been proved to be challenging. However, galaxies and their supermassive black holes are believed to reside in haloes made of dark matter.

The Black Hole was formed by Rob Rivera and some friends back in 1996, who set the tone for a rowdy, at times aggressive group of Raiders loyalists that grew and grew and now dominates sections 104-107 along the southern end zone.

"This place is legendary," said Rivera, the Black Hole president. "There are so many good times and good memories with good people that it's hard to pick one, two or even three. …There are probably some that we can't repeat."

A n international team of scientists led by China has discovered a king-size, stellar-mass black hole in Earth's "cosmic backyard" containing the mass of 70 Suns. It is the biggest known of its kind and roughly three times bigger than what scientists previously thought was possible, researchers said on 28 November.

The discovery challenged astronomers ' understanding of the formation models for black holes of its class, and provided a new way to find similar black holes in the Milky Way galaxy that may lead to new theories for black-hole astrophysics and stellar evolution.

Astronomers Discover Biggest Black Hole That Can Pack '40 Billion' Suns

H umans are mostly the size of dust when compared to the size of stars, solar systems, galaxies, etc. If that didn’t induce a feeling of existential dread at this very moment, then this will surely do the trick.

Astronomers have recorded a massive black hole that is roughly two-thirds of the mass of all the stars in the Milky Way. The black hole is forty billion times the sun’s mass. In other words, it can pack up to 40 billion suns just like the one present in our solar system.

This past April, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international network of telescopes, produced an image of a black hole that exists 55 million light years away at the center another galaxy, Messier 87. The image produced by the EHT was fuzzy as hell—it looked like somebody took a picture of a bonfire with an old Blackberry phone. NASA reported that the black hole is 6.5 billion times the mass of our sun . Its technical category is "supermassive.

Your average black hole is created when a star burns out and is crushed by its own gravity. However, origins of supermassive black holes like the one recently imaged are still a bit of a mystery.
