Space travel can make the gut leaky | News

Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can enter our gut through the food we eat. Fortunately, the epithelial cells that line our intestines serve as a robust barrier to prevent these microorganisms from invading the rest of our bodies.

A research team led by a biomedical scientist at the University of California, Riverside, has found that simulated microgravity, such as that encountered in spaceflight, disrupts the functioning of the epithelial barrier even after removal from the microgravity environment.

It's designed to take up to six space tourists for short antigravity experiences at the Kármán line.

That's the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space. This is the company's 12th test flight, and it's 11th successful landing. This is the third version of the vehicle.

But other New Shepard Rockets have been launched into space and back. This particular rocket now holds the record for the New Shepard rocket with the most trips to space, six. But all those test flights have been without passengers, as Blue Origin is still making sure the vehicle is ready for them.

Space travel: Scientists plan 1,000 year trip to distant planet | Science | News | Express.co.uk

Breakthrough Starshot – a project which will see a small spaceship powered by ground-based lasers – could theoretically travel at 25 percent the speed of light – 46,500 miles per second – completing the journey in just 40 years.

However, carrying humans with a heavier load is a completely different ballpark and it would take thousands of years to complete the 40 trillion mile journey, which is why scientists have established the idea of a “generation ship”, where people are born, give birth and die on the ship.

Europe sending self-destructing robot into orbit to clean up space | FOX6Now.com

Our orbit is filled with garbage, including chunks of dead satellites, discarded rockets, and paint flecks that have fallen off them. The mission, named ClearSpace-1, will take the first step in tidying up this extraterrestrial wasteland, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).

A four-armed robot, developed by Swiss startup ClearSpace, will latch onto debris before diving back down to Earth, where both machine and junk will “burn up in the atmosphere,” according to the ESA.

Weed and coffee are finally going to space

"SpaceX is about to send hemp to the ISS" is maybe the most perfectly 2019 sentence, and thankfully, it's true.

Specifically, an upcoming research project will use a March 2020 SpaceX flight to send plant cultures of hemp and coffee to the International Space Station for studying. This is all thanks to a collaboration between Front Range Biosciences, SpaceCells USA, and BioServe Space Technologies at the University of Colorado.

Front Range will supply the plants, SpaceCells the management and funding, and BioServe the hardware to take care of the plants. BioServe will also monitor the hemp and coffee remotely from Earth to monitor whether radiation and lack of gravity mutate the plants in any way. After 30 days, the plants will come back home for further examination.

There are also several proposed missions that will involve sending astronauts to space for extended periods of time. Between 2024 and 2028, NASA intends to send astronauts back to the Moon for the first time since the Apollo Era (as part of Project Artemis ).

During the 2030s, China, Russia, and the European Space Agency (ESA) hope to send their first crewed missions to the Moon. India is likely to be not far behind since they hope to send their first astronauts to orbit by 2022. And before the 2030s are out, NASA also hopes to send the first astronauts to Mars.

'Space elevator' could help humans travel to distant worlds at 1% the cost of a rocket

HUMANS could one day bin rockets and travel to space in giant elevators instead, according to a new report.

The idea has been around for more than a century but has gained traction in recent years due to advances in material science.

Among other benefits, the cost for a trip in one of the cosmic lifts would be about one per cent that of a traditional rocket launch.

"As we enter the third decade of the 21st century, it is perhaps time to ask just how far off such a structure might be and exactly how we could build it," he wrote.

Spacesuits for future space travel -Industry Global News24

Reports released in July, 2019 said that there might be a delay in NASA’s Artemis goal of 2024 and the reason isn’t obvious. Many of those reading this piece of information must be thinking if the delay is because of rocket technology or the launch. The reason is as different as the title itself. NASA still has to develop a new spacesuit, meeting the requirements of the mission.

Earlier this year, during the summer, the all-female spacewalk had to be cancelled following the implications of spacesuit design limitations. This entire episode became the source of public frustration. NASA had to take this matter seriously and started rectifying the situation by reemphasizing their investment in suits. It was necessary to design the suit keeping in mind the gender or body types.
