Research led by astronomers at UC Santa Cruz and Carnegie Institution for Science has implications for understanding how planets form
* * *
A surprising analysis of the compositions of gas giant exoplanets and their host stars shows that there isn’t a strong correlation between their compositions when it comes to elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. The new findings, published in the Astronomical Journal , have important implications for understanding the planetary formation process.

Who's fiddling while the planet burns? | News, Sports, Jobs - The Journal
“Do we really want to be remembered as the generation that buried its head in the sand, that fiddled while the planet burned?” asked U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres this week. He was addressing representatives from nearly 200 nations, gathered in Spain for a meeting on climate change.
Perhaps Guterres should be talking to the world’s most egregious polluters — the Chinese. While the United States, often singled out as climate change enemy No. 1, have been cutting carbon emissions, Beijing has been increasing them.
New 'Planet of the Apes' Movie in the Works With 'Maze Runner' Filmmaker
The Apes are back. Fox has brought on Wes Ball, the filmmaker behind the popular Maze Runner film series, to develop and direct a new Planet of the Apes feature, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The move makes Apes one of the first historically significant Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney’s acquisition of the storied studio.
The movie was a commercial and critical hit upon its release and spawned numerous sequels and a TV series throughout the 1970s. In 2001, Tim Burton remade the film as an action-adventure that failed to excite audiences.
As Climate Talks Begin, U.N. Chief Warns Against 'Fiddling' While The Planet Burns : NPR

The United Nations climate change conference began with a bracing warning: We are running late, and that is going to make this harder.
"Millions throughout the world, especially young people, are calling on leaders from all sectors to do more, much more to address the climate emergency we face," U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday.

The Half-Earth movement wants to protect 50% of the planet
Setting aside half of Earth’s surface for only nature could directly affect more than 1 billion people, primarily in lower-middle-income countries, according to recent research out of the University of Cambridge. Could we still make it work?
Wondering what the social and economic consequences of this drastic change would be, the Cambridge scientists looked to assess its effect. To ensure protection for all of Earth’s ecosystems and their relative species, the researchers divided the Earth into 846 discrete “ecoregions,” large, geographical areas defined by their specific habitats, like the Baltic mixed forests or the Great Plains.
Here’s Something: Help Gov. Janet save the planet - Portland Press Herald
Gov. Janet Mills is going to need Mainers' help if she is to achieve her plan to make Maine carbon neutral by 2045.
It's time to think big because we have only nine years, maybe 12, to reverse the curse of global warming. It's time to not only think drastically but act that way, too.
Since Mills unveiled her plan in September in a speech at the United Nations' Climate Action Summit, the governor last week took yet another step toward clamping down on fossil fuel consumption. She issued an executive order requiring state government agencies to develop and implement plans by September 2021 to reach her goals regarding carbon output.
Massive 'Dust Towers' on Mars Look Like Supersized Versions of Earth's Thunderstorms | Space
Dust towers can loom dozens of miles above Mars' surface and are part of larger dust storms that sweep up the planet's iconic reddish dirt, blanketing the world. One giant storm last year brought NASA's Opportunity mission to an end and masked Mars' features in a dull coating of dust, as seen in an incredible moving image from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The scientists behind the new research said they wanted to better understand how storms like these work.
Jupiter Enters Capricorn 2019 Planetary Transit Meaning
One of my favorite things about being an astrologer: all the ~drama~. Sure, I get a hefty dose of tea when I write your monthly horoscopes and sort out the mess that is yet to come, but the biggest theatrics actually occur in the sky within the relationships between the planets.
Our ancient ancestors believed that Jupiter was the harbinger of luck, fortune, and abundance, but over time, we’ve learned that Jupiter is a bit more nuanced. Experiencing Jupiter is like going to a casino: It’s fun and lighthearted at the start, but things can devolve into dark, depressing hedonism. Jupiter magnifies anything it touches and has the ability to amplify both pleasure and pain.
