A giant planet is orbiting the remnants of an exploded star – called a white dwarf – 1200 light years away from Earth. The discovery is the first time an entire planet has been found orbiting a white dwarf.
The first hint that there may be planets orbiting white dwarfs came earlier this year, when researchers found a small piece of planet in orbit around a white dwarf. Now the same team has discovered evidence of a giant intact planet, similar in size to Jupiter.

I read a paper that came out recently on a topic that had never occurred to me: For a while, the Earth had a temporary moon… but then it burned up in our atmosphere as a meteor.
When you go outside at night at a dark site and keep your eye on the say, chances are you'll see a handful of meteors every hour . These are called sporadic meteors , basically bits of rock or metal from asteroids created in impacts long ago. Ejected from the collisions, these pieces go off on their own orbits around the Sun, and sometimes their orbit intersects ours.
China Just launched a New Earth-Watching Satellite Into Orbit | Space
On Thanksgiving (Nov. 28), China launched another satellite into Earth's orbit, capping off a very busy month for the country.
Gaofen-12, a new Earth observation satellite, flew to space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi Province, according to state news source Xinhua . The rocket successfully took off at 7:52 a.m. Beijing time on Nov. 28, which is 6:52 p.m. EDT or 2352 GMT Nov. 27.
The satellite launched on a Long March-4C rocket, which marks the 320th flight for this type of rocket. Footage from Chinese television station CCTV showed the rocket flawlessly lifting off into a cloudy sky , flames spitting out from beneath the booster. The footage also shows engineers and other officials closely monitoring the rocket's progress into orbit. "I hereby announce that the launch mission is successful," said an unnamed engineer, according to CCTV's translation.
Lil Bub's Owner Wants To Launch Celeb Cat's Remains Into Space
Lil Bub 's remains will soon be orbiting the Earth in a satellite ... at least, that's what the late celebrity cat's owner envisions for her final resting place.
Lil Bub's caretaker, Mike Bridavsky , tells TMZ ... he's planning to load the feline's cremated remains into a satellite and launch it into orbit so Bub can watch over the planet, and he's working with Purdue University to get his spacey idea off the ground.
FYI, the aerospace program is already involved in commercial satellite programs and with the International Space Station ... so Bub would be piggybacking off of those.

Expedition 61 Commander Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency) and NASA Flight Engineer Andrew Morgan concluded their spacewalk at 12:33 p.m. EST.
During the six hour and two minute spacewalk, the two astronauts successfully installed a new cooling system for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).
The crew completed the primary task to install the upgraded cooling system, called the upgraded tracker thermal pump system (UTTPS), completed the power and data cable connection for the system, and connected all eight cooling lines from the AMS to the new system. The intricate connection work required making a clean cut for each existing stainless steel tube connected to the AMS then connecting it to the new system through a process of metalworking known as swaging.

A fireball spotted burning up in the Australian sky was actually a tiny moon that had lost its place in orbit, scientists claim.
Known as a minimoon, these objects are thought to be space rocks that have been captured by Earth's gravity, but only for a short time.
The fireball was first spotted by Australia's Desert Fireball Network in August 2016 and at the time astronomers thought it was a normal meteor.
Researchers studying its trajectory say the fireball, called DN160822_03, actually circled the Earth before losing orbit, making it a minimoon.
Japanese sensor to hunt for oil and gas from orbit - Nikkei
TOKYO -- The Japanese government will launch as early as Thursday morning a high-precision sensor into orbit that can be used to search for oil and natural gas from space.
The sensor will be carried to the International Space Station aboard a rocket launched from Florida by U.S. startup SpaceX. The sensor will be attached to the outside of the station and begin operating next year.
The device, developed in Japan, is called hyperspectral imager and can identify different wavelengths of light more precisely than conventional sensors. It can also spot signs of oil and natural gas deposits from space.
