The idea for "They Promised Her the Moon," a thrilling yet poetic play about two extraordinary pilots — the famous Jackie Cochran and the relatively obscure Jerrie Cobb — occurred to playwright Laurel Ollstein about 10 years ago.
"The story found me," Ollstein said by phone from the Redwood Shores offices of TheatreWorks Silicon Valley recently.
"NASA had canceled a program to go to the moon, and I thought it would be so horrible to train for it, then not go. I was doing a story about a woman who had been in astronaut training. I started Googling, and found Jerrie Cobb.

If you've never seen Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, this week will give you a chance to find it. You will need a telescope to get a decent view of the blue-green planet, but on Saturday it's going to be just 2.3º from Venus—the brightest object in the night sky aside from the moon.

BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- China's lunar rover Yutu-2, or Jade Rabbit-2, has driven 399.788 meters on the far side of the moon to conduct scientific exploration of the virgin territory.
Both the lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have ended their work for the 15th lunar day, and switched to dormant mode for the lunar night, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.
China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec. 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3, 2019.

Today there are more than 200 metric tons of cultural material on the lunar surface. On the far side of the moon, Chinese lander and rover begin 15th lunar day | Space
China's Chang'e 4 mission has entered its 15th lunar day of work on the far side of the moon, with both the Chang'e 4 lander and the Yutu 2 rover still in good condition.
The mission made a historic, first-ever landing on the lunar far side in January 2019, and its two surface craft are still going strong, despite the moon's harsh radiation and temperature environment.
Yutu 2 awoke on Feb. 17 following sunrise, with a preset plan to continue driving northwest and then southwest across the floor of Von Kármán Crater . Back on Earth, the Yutu 2 drive team has implemented measures such as wearing masks to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.
Hike of the Week: Experience Vail's backcountry in a new light with a guided full moon excursion
This Sunday, March 8, Walking Mountains Science Center will be hosting its final Full Moon Experience snowshoe, the third in the winter-long series. Guests have one final chance to hike by moonlight and experience Vail's backcountry in a new light, all while staying warm by a backcountry fire.
This program starts at 7:30 p.m. with a brief social half hour in Walking Mountains Science Center's exhibit hall in Avon. Enjoy desserts catered by Foods at Vail and hot drinks before putting on provided snowshoes and heading up the trail.

AVALON - Recreation Director Charles McDonnell Jr. briefed Avalon Borough Council on an unusual special event that may take place June 5.
McDonnell was responding to requests from members of the Recreation Advisory Council for a "full moon" party on the beach at 30th Street. Although the origins are in some dispute, many credit Thailand with beginning the tradition in 1983.
The issue was brought to the governing body in part because the municipality has an ordinance that forbids fires on the beach.
