Roboticists are developing automated robots that can learn new tasks solely by observing humans. At home, you might someday show a domestic robot how to do routine chores.

Making progress on that vision, MIT researchers have designed a system that lets these types of robots learn complicated tasks that would otherwise stymie them with too many confusing rules. One such task is setting a dinner table under certain conditions.
At its core, the researchers' "Planning with Uncertain Specifications" (PUnS) system gives robots the humanlike planning ability to simultaneously weigh many ambiguous — and potentially contradictory — requirements to reach an end goal. In doing so, the system always chooses the most likely action to take, based on a "belief" about some probable specifications for the task it is supposed to perform.

A psychological theory could kickstart improvements in the way robots are able to walk, thanks to a University of Manchester study.
The study—a unique collaboration between a clinical psychologist , robotics engineers and a robotics entrepreneur is published in the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems today.
It analysed what happens when standard algorithms driving a self-balancing robot—made from simple Lego—were replaced with those based on 'perceptual control theory'.

Fetch intends to debut the new Freight 500, called CartConnect500, which can lug up to 500 kilograms (or 1,100 pounds) at the Modex 2020 trade show in Atlanta on March 9. A fully autonomous version of the Freight 1,500, which can haul up to 1,500 kilograms (or 3,300 pounds), is in development and likely will launch later this year. The robots have attachable, industrial-grade carts that can carry bins and totes for efficiency and organization.
While San Jose, California-based Fetch has offered its Freight lineup of pallet movers since 2017, making them fully autonomous and attaching carts to them is a big step forward. "For carts, it's completely new for the industry," says Wise. "The robot has to find the cart, detect it and pick it up."

"We've built a proof of concept demonstration of a heterogeneous fleet of robots building distribution center orders to provide a more flexible warehouse automation solution," Blankespoor said in a statement. "To meet the rates that our customers expect, we're continuing to expand Handle's capabilities and optimizing its interactions with other robots like the OTTO 1500 for warehouse applications."

AI Is Growing, But The Robots Are Not Coming For Customer Service
The report predicts that in the next three years, 37% of job openings in emerging professions will be in the care economy; 17% in sales, marketing and content; 16% in data and AI; 12% in engineering and cloud computing; and 8% in people and culture. Among the roles with fastest projected growth include specialists in both AI and customer success, underscoring the need for technology, yes, but technology that incorporates the human touch.

This increasing demand for digital-human hybrid solutions is all around us. We don't need to look further than the rising crop of DTC retail brands— the Dollar Shave Clubs, Bonobos and Glossiers of the world— to see and understand the critical role that this hybrid approach can play, especially when it comes to transforming the customer experience.
