Nothing is supposed to be able to escape a black hole – but THIS thing did | Science | News |
The hole the explosion punched into the super-hot medium known as cluster plasma around the black hole was the size of 15 Milky Ways.
The Milky Way is our own galaxy – and it's quite big. It contains 200 BILLION stars like the Sun and if NASA's Voyager satellite, which is currently travelling at 62,000kmh (38,000 mph), were to try and cross it the journey would take more than 1,700 MILLION years.
The hole, described as a crater in spacetime, was spotted in the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster, about 390 million light-years from Earth. It is 15 Milky Ways wide.
Slovakia seeks escape from corruption black hole | Slovakia News | Al Jazeera
Bratislava, Slovakia - Corruption is not only the central issue in the upcoming Slovak elections, it is the only issue.
Slovaks go to the polls on February 29 with demands for the deep cleansing of a state in which many fear democracy is at risk from deep-rooted corruption and organised crime.
People here may complain about the underfunded health service, underpaid teachers, and the lack of transport infrastructure connecting the underprivileged east of the country, but corruption is the only game in town ahead of this vote.
Black hole news: 'Strange' gas movements point to new species of black hole | Science | News |
The absence of stellar counterparts indicates that the point-like object may be a quiescent black hole
* * *
This suggests the presence of a quiescent black hole – a cosmic body not actively feeding and therefore emitting no detectable radiation.
This is the fifth such candidate sitting in the galaxy’s heart, adding to the evidence intermediate mass black holes not only exist, but they are actually abundant in the centre of the Milky Way.

Astronomers Want Your Help Identifying Black Holes | Digital Trends
Astronomers are asking for the public’s help in identifying black holes using data from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope. LOFAR is a radio telescope that has completed a huge survey of the sky and spotted many potential black holes, but the data requires further classification before it can be used for research purposes.
"LOFAR's new survey has revealed millions of previously undetected radio sources,” Huub Röttgering, astronomer from Leiden University in The Netherlands and first chair of LOFAR’s Astronomy Research Committee, said in a statement . “With the help of the public we can investigate the nature of these sources: Where are their black holes? In what kind of galaxies are the black holes located?''
Spending watchdog calls for action on UK defence budget 'black hole' | Jane's 360
In a bid to bridge a GBP6-billion (USD7.7-billion) budget shortfall over the next five years, the UK is taking a year-long gap in its airborne early warning (AEW) capability as part of a series of cost-savings measures.
The National Audit Office (NAO) revealed the details of the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) financial difficulties in its annual investigation into its 2019–29 Equipment Plan, which was published on 27 February.
To try to bridge shortfalls in its GBP180-billion budget for buying new hardware and supporting existing weapons, the MoD has set the UK armed forces a series of new efficiency savings, the NAO revealed. These include reducing the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) E-3D Sentry AEW aircraft fleet from six to three aircraft in January and then withdrawing all the remaining aircraft from service in December 2022 as part of a GBP1.9-billion savings drive by the service.
