Meet the people who have spent $300,000 or more to travel to space

Sharon Hagle waited over 60 years to go suborbital.   In 1961, when she was in sixth grade, she sat transfixed, listening to the radio as astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to travel to outer space.

But this year, on March 31, she emulated her hero by taking a seat on New Shepard 4, flight NS-20, as part of the fourth crewed mission of Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket program.

Alien-hunting array catches Voyager 1 signal from interstellar space

The Allen Telescope Array in California detected signal from the Voyager 1 probe, the NASA satellite launched 45 year ago that is currently speeding toward the outer edges of the solar system, way beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Companies Are Racing to Put 5G in Space - ExtremeTech

Cellular coverage has improved over the years as carriers moved from one technology to the next. But even in the 5G era, only 10% of Earth has accessible mobile networks. Instead of building towers with a few miles of range, the future may be in space.

In April this year, Lynk Global launched its first direct-to-mobile commercial satellite aboard a Falcon 9 rocket (above) and applied to the FCC for permission to operate mobile phone service from space.

Scout Space and university labs win contracts for on-orbit servicing project - SpaceNews

WASHINGTON — Scout Space , a startup developing technologies for in-space services, won two U.S. Space Force contracts in support of the debris-cleanup project known as Orbital Prime.

Each contract is worth $250,000. The company announced Aug. 24 its partners for the project are Stanford University's Space Rendezvous Laboratory ( SLAB ) and the Florida Institute of Technology's Orion Lab .

From the spare room to outer space: A DIY project that could transform solar power

Perovskite solar cells can match silicon for efficiency, are cheaper to manufacture and more flexible, but they haven't become commercially viable yet, because they're still too unstable when exposed to heat, light, moisture and oxygen.

That's where Jamie's device comes in. A combination of a microscope and a special laser, it produces pictures and maps of the defects within solar cells and tells scientists where the cells are losing power or efficiency over time and use. It also provides data to indicate why.
