The strange case of eyeball planets | Astronomy.com

The habitable zone, or Goldilocks zone, is the region surrounding a star where water can exist on the surface of an orbiting planet or moon. The hotter the star, the farther away its habitable zone sits.

That proximity makes it much easier to spot any planets that pass in front of the tiny star, as such eclipses tend to block a large fraction of starlight and make the presence of an exoplanet clear.

They were once the only exo-planets we knew of. Turns out, they're extremely rare

Thirty years ago, researchers discovered the first ever exoplanets — planets outside our solar system. The planets were orbiting a pulsar, a type of neutron star, one of the most extreme objects in the known universe.

Finding stars is one thing — they emit a lot of light, they’re often very big, you can even see stars with the naked eye in the night sky. But finding planets is another. Planets don’t emit light of their own, so finding them is a whole different ball game.

Here's your chance to name newly discovered planets

With NASA's new Webb Space Telescope spotting many new exoplanets, the International Astronomical Union is allowing the public to help name the newly discovered worlds.

The team is then required to submit its name proposal both in writing and on video. Teams have until Nov. 11 to submit their proposals.

Alien planets: A first-of-its-kind observatory will boost the search for exoplanets

But getting an accurate picture of these exoplanets, let alone determining if they are habitable, is immensely complex.

"The ability to look for exoplanets - planets that orbit around stars - is one of the hardest optical engineering challenges we've ever tried. And it's not been solved," John C Mather , senior astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, told IE .

"If you looked at Earth sitting next to Mars or Venus from a distant vantage point, then depending on when you observed them, you might think they're both the same object," explains Dr. Prabal Saxena, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

NASA created this new composite image of Jupiter with data recorded by the James Webb Space Telescope. Using its near-infrared camera, the instrument can pick up radiation the human eye doesn't perceive.
