The joint Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission consists of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DAR) spacecraft, which will slam into the space space rock and ESA’s HERA mission which will proceed to study the impact.
Near-Earth asteroids will either strike the Earth’s surface or explode in a fire all at low altitude, in both cases causing severe damage over regions of thousands of square kilometres or more

NASA asteroid tracker: 721FT asteroid is barreling towards Earth at more than 30,000MPH | Science
The imposing asteroid was only discovered in October this year but NASA has uncovered a treasure-trove of information about the rock.

Apollo-type rocks like UR2 cross our planet’s orbit in a fashion similar to Asteroid 1862 Apollo.
NASA said: “By understanding more about these space rocks now, we are better prepared to take appropriate measures in the future.”
Since the asteroid’s discovery in October, NASA has made 82 orbital observations to determine UR2’s size, speed and trajectory.
Japanese Spacecraft Captures Final-Ever Images Of Asteroid Ryugu As It Begins Its Journey Home
Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft has departed from the asteroid Ryugu, where it landed twice on the surface to collect samples, and is now journeying back to Earth to arrive in late 2020.
On Wednesday, November 13, the Japanese space agency (JAXA) confirmed that Hayabusa2 had fired its chemical propulsion thrusters to leave its orbit around the asteroid. "The thruster operation of Hayabusa2 occurred nominally," JAXA said in a short statement. "The velocity leaving from Ryugu is approximately 9.2 centimeters per second."
Is an Asteroid Expected to Hit Earth Around Christmas?
On Oct. 23, 2019, the U.K. tabloid Express published an article that left some readers believing they need not make Christmas plans this year because Earth was in danger of being hit by a large asteroid:
When the article was regurgitated by even less-reputable websites, the fear-mongering title morphed into a factually inaccurate claim. For instance, the website Digital Wise rehashed this article under the title "NASA Issues Warning Over Asteroid Predicted To Hit Earth Five Days Before Christmas!"
In case you are keeping track:
Asteroid fears: NASA warning over 'raining nuclear rocks' striking Earth revealed |
Dr Starkey wrote last year: “If we have very limited time, then we require an approach that can work in weeks or months.
“So, a more drastic method to avoid an impact with Earth, one that could work on any object regardless of its composition, might be called for.
“How about using a nuclear weapon? It may sound like total madness but, believe it or not, scientists are looking at the possibility of firing such a device at a space object to blow it into tiny pieces, maybe even reducing it to a cloud of gas and liquid droplets.
Pioneering NASA Asteroid Mission Clears Key Hurdle on Path to 2021 Launch | Space
The first mission to visit a mysterious swarm of asteroids that circle the sun along Jupiter's path has cleared an important hurdle on the way to its 2021 launch.
During the four-day CDR, independent experts assessed all aspects of Lucy's design, ultimately deeming the mission fit to proceed to the manufacturing phase.

"This is a very exciting time for us, because we are moving beyond the design phase and are really starting to build the spacecraft," Lucy principal investigator Hal Levison, from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, said in a statement Monday (Oct. 21). "It is finally becoming real!"
Nasa: Huge asteroid heading our way will arrive just before Christmas | Metro News
So we're glad to report that the world will definitely not end this December, even though a gigantic monster space rock is heading our way.
* * *
It will come with 3.7 million miles of our planet, which sounds like a huge distance but is tiny in cosmic terms.
Unfortunately, it's a matter of time before we're hit by an asteroid and the European Space Agency recently found a space rock that could be on a collision course with Earth.
Hubble Catches Incredible 'Photobomb' of an Asteroid Streaking Past Crab Nebula
That's not a glitch or an artefact - the 'scratch' in this beautiful image is in fact an asteroid, streaking across the field of view while the Hubble Space Telescope recently imaged the Crab Nebula .
To take an image, Hubble generally has to be fixated on a patch of the sky for a period of time. Just as a long exposure of the night sky can result in star trails , Hubble can capture the trails of other astronomical objects.
Sometimes software programs can be used to identify interesting elements in pictures; one such example is the software used to pick out dimming stars from exoplanet-hunting telescopes like TESS.
